Trados Studio FAQ
Here's the answer to this frequently asked question about Studio.
FAQ
Subscription or perpetual: which Trados Studio license is right for you?
Trados Studio offers both subscription and perpetual licensing options - and regardless of which you choose, you'll have access to the same core features and functionality. The main differences lie in flexibility, cost structure, and how updates are delivered.
Subscription
Our subscription plans offer flexible payment options, making them ideal for freelancers and organizations with changing needs. The available plans vary depending on whether you're using Trados Studio Freelance or Trados Studio Professional:
Trados Studio Freelance:
- Monthly: Rolling monthly contract.
- Annual: Monthly payments with a 12-month commitment.
- Annual Saver: One annual payment with a 12-month commitment.
Trados Studio Professional:
- One annual payment with a 12-month commitment.
Benefits of a subscription:
- Lower upfront cost compared to a perpetual license.
- 14-day risk-free period for Freelance subscriptions - cancel within the first two weeks if it’s not right for you.
- Always access the latest version, with automatic updates and upgrades included.
- Easily add extra licenses (ideal for growing teams).
- Option to cancel at the end of each contract term.
Note: Subscription licenses provide access to Trados Studio for the duration of your plan - you do not own the software outright.
Perpetual
A perpetual license provides long-term ownership with a single upfront payment.
Benefits of a perpetual license:
- Higher initial cost, but no ongoing fees.
- You own the license permanently.
- Receive updates and service releases for your purchased version (while supported).
- Option to upgrade to future versions for an additional fee.
This option is ideal for users who prefer a one-time investment and long-term use without recurring commitments.
Which option is right for you?
If you’re part of a team with fluctuating workloads or need the ability to scale quickly, an annual subscription may offer the flexibility you need. For those looking to fix their costs upfront and retain long-term control, a perpetual license may be the better choice.
